HOME SAFETY
Are You Far Enough Behind?
In 2005, there were 139,265 reported motor vehicle accidents in the state
of Arizona alone. Rear-end collisions accounted for approximately 44.16%
of all crashes statewide, and 14.16% of fatal car crashes in Arizona. This
arouses the question, "How far back should I be from the car in front
of me?"
Here are a few simple guidelines to ensure you, and all drivers stay safe:
An easy way to judge this distance is to pick a stationary object - like a street sign - in front of you, and wait for the vehicle ahead of you to pass it. When the rear bumper of the vehicle passes the object, begin counting. It should take two seconds before the front bumper of your car passes the same point.
By following these simple steps, you can help reduce the risk of injury or accident for yourself and for other drivers. And remember, seat belts save lives; always remember to buckle-up!
