Latest Medical Breakthrough To Avoid Back Surgey
While working in the garage you go to lift a heavy box to put it on the
shelf. All of a sudden you feel a pop in your lower back. You drop the box
and severe pain shoots down your leg, starting from your back. You can't
stand straight. Your back has gone out before - but never like this. Off
to the doctor or hospital you go. An MRI is ordered and the news is grim.
The doctor says that you have a herniated disk and that you need surgery
to correct it.
Until now, most physicians have only been left with the options of prescription medications, invasive procedures known as neuromodulation and neuroablation, or surgery. Unfortunately, a lot of chronic back pain patients end up addicted to narcotic pain meds. Now, there is another option, known as Non-surgical Spinal Decompression; a medical breakthrough in the non-drug, non-surgical approach to chronic back pain, according to the American Journal of Pain Management. They reported a very favorable relief rate among patients suffering from herniated discs who had undergone non-surgical spinal decompression.
In many cases of back pain, bulging or herniated disc material is often the culprit. The bulging material puts pressure on the nerves and creates pain that can travel into the buttocks and even down the legs. Non-surgical decompression relieves pain by stretching the spine, effectively creating a vacuum (negative pressure) that draws the bulging and herniated disc material back into place. As the pressure decreases, so does the pain.
Unlike surgery, there is no recovery period for non-surgical spinal decompression. Patients may go home or return to non-strenuous activities after their treatment. The cost is less than one-tenth the cost of back surgery, which can be as much as $40-60,000.
Additionally, the procedure is approved by the FDA for treatment of spinal pain and herniated disks. Usually within 6 weeks and 20 visits, your back pain is history.
Gary Claxton, Vice President of the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation, which monitors health care spending says, "The rising costs and the growth in the number of back surgeries is a good example of why healthcare expenditures are more than double inflation." Dr. Doug Burton, surgeon and senior spine research professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center says, "there is a major shift to Spinal-fusion procedures that use expensive mechanical devices to help fuse diseased vertebra together." However, Dr. Burton added, "it's an uncertain outcome." He further stated that these procedures are "expensive and has not resulted in significantly better outcomes" and he limits the procedure himself.
The approach is unique and the Non-surgical decompression procedure is only available through a limited number of physicians (approximately 1,500 non-surgical spinal decompression tables in existence, according to a Medicare report).
According to Dr. Frank Liberti of Spinal Aid Centers of America, "Non-surgical Spinal Decompression therapy is the latest, hi-tech treatment for those suffering the debilitating effects of bulging and herniated discs, sciatica, stenosis and spinal degeneration/arthritis."
