Climb Every Mountain...
and Then Watch Out!
We hear lots of talk about the mountains and valleys of life. The mountains
are where we relish being. Existing in the valleys may mean pain, loneliness
or even day-to-day boredom.
In this issue the theme is addictions. Some are dangerous like drugs and alcohol. They can kill us. Others like pornography and gambling and overeating can ruin relationships and cause us incredible pain. It's often then we cry out to God for help. I always want to stay on the mountain where life is good and things are going my way. But last week I listened to an interesting sermon. Our pastor said that King David in the Bible fell flat on his face when everything was going well for him. It was at such a time that he committed adultery and murder. The prophet Nathan confronted him of his sin and he repented. But he paid a price. Because of his sins, David's family fought and suffered for generations. And it all happened when he was at the top of his game. So this month, the beginning of a brand-new year, I am asking Jesus to show me how to be faithful to Him when things are going my way, when I don't really feel desperate for an answer to prayer.
I interviewed a Jewish believer recently who describes the joy of being in God's presence. She told me that God will make Himself known to us when we humble ourselves before Him. In Psalm 51:17 David writes: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, Thou will not despise." This year, reach out to God daily - when we fall and even when things are going pretty well. Let's do it together! Every morning talk to Him, spend some time in the Bible, journal your prayers and thoughts, sing to Him. Listen, listen and then listen some more.
Will it work? You bet. For King David, it did. Write me and tell me how it goes.
Love ya,
Kathy
