Valentines for the Valiant
For 33 years on Valentine's Day the Veterans Administration has sponsored
its "National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans". The Southern Arizona
VA Health Care System is no exception.
Each year the VA hospital stages a remarkable tribute to hospitalized veterans. For two days various groups from the greater Tucson area gather at the VA to deliver Valentine's greetings, candy and most of all appreciation for the sacrifice of those who served their country.
Often the veterans are not aware of the coming of the many groups on this special day. To them, this unexpected attention is a special treat. The visitors from veteran's organization, civic groups, the Red Cross, school children, and active military convey a special appreciation and admiration for the sacrifices made by so many.
In past years, the organizers of the event, which starts on the evening of the 13th and continues through Valentine's Day, have assured the presence of recognizable dignitaries. For several years General John Wicham, former Chief of Staff of the US Army, has paid his respects, often engaging an old comrade from service long ago. One of the regulars in past years was a John Wayne impersonator, appearing as the quintessential Rooster Cogburn, giving many a veteran the familiar "Pilgrim" greeting.
The event starts with an orientation and light refreshment. Visitors are then assigned to escorts from the VA staff who make sure every corner of the vast VA facility is covered. It is hard to determine who gets the most out of the experience. For many visitors it evokes memories of their own service and comrades of yesterday.
Volunteer opportunities abound at the VA for people of all ages. The Southern Arizona Veterans Health Care System has a wide variety of meaningful volunteer opportunities, including the Valentines for Vets program.
To volunteer or for more information, call the Volunteer Service Office at (520) 629-1822.
Oh, and by the way, thank a veteran. And pray for those in foreign lands fighting to preserve our freedom and establish freedom for others.
