The Linus Project:
Compassion in a Blanket
Linus, that small insecure little character from Peanuts cartoons of long
ago, just keeps on giving. You may recall he was always fortified with a
blanket socially reminiscent of many of our children, who in their formative
years clutched a blanket as security wherever they went. In some instances
that blanket, a refuge of safety and security, was reduced to a few square
inches as the owner grew older and the blanket dwindled in size.
Many thousands of children, and even adults, have received comfort and solace from these miniature Linus blankets crafted by hundreds of loving hands in Project Linus. This national, non-profit, all volunteer organization has a mission to provide a sense of love, security and comfort to seriously ill children through the gift of a new homemade blanket. In recent years the blankets have made their way to victims of traumas such as school shootings and accidents.
The fabric is mostly donated and prepared into kits that are distributed to volunteers who craft the blankets. Materials are always welcome. Several congregations in Tucson participate in Project Linus. Among them are Grace Community Covenant and Northminster Presbyterian.
