When Bad Things Happen
It happens locally. It happens all around the world. Tragedy. And when tragedy strikes, sometimes the first question that is asked is “Couldn’t God have stopped it.”
Take last month for example. One of Tucson’s most caring charities,
The Giving Tree, experienced extreme loss when its newest facility and family
shelter was burned down by arsonists. The building, which was not yet insured
due to the timing of the close of escrow, suffered more than $750,000 in
damage. Did I mention it was not insured, meaning that the charity is experiencing
a huge loss. Executive Director Libby Wright had just promised many families
hope, help, and a new start in life only to have these dreams shattered.
It became even more tragic for Tucson. The small town of Catalina was shaken when a four month old baby boy was left inside a car on a warm day for more than three hours, forgotten about by his father. The baby was rushed to Northwest Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Why do bad things happen to innocent babies or to people who try to do good? It’s an age-old question, and for some it even prevents them from believing in God. How could a loving God, they reason, allow such evil and turmoil to exist in the world?
In our cover story, we take a look at such vexing questions and try to make sense of God when it seems God doesn’t make sense.
Here’s what does make sense... when tragedy strikes, we can reach out to help, heal, mend and repair. For example, in our story, “The Giving Tree Needs Tucsonans Help,” we give you several ways to help this non-profit organization continue to be a blessing to our community.
Bad things do happen. But we can choose to be good and do good!
