Summer Activities and Camps
“Hey, Mom – I’m bored!”
The dreaded words every mom fears as summer approaches. But, fear not!
Here in Tucson, there’s a summer camp or program for just about
every interest. Here’s a list of some of the activities in our
area this summer.
Immaculate Heart High School –
Summer Enrichment Program“Newton’s Knights”
IHHS’s Summer Enrichment Program - Newton’s Knights - is
structured to bring out the Newton (as in Sir Isaac Newton, a mathematician
and physicist and one of the foremost scientific intellects of all
time!) in every participant - by lighting in them the desire for exploration,
interest in investigation and the excitement of discovery.
Registration Deadline: May 3, 2008
Grades: 4th through 9th
Dates: June 2 through June 27th (Monday – Friday)
Time: 8:00 am until 3:00 pm
Program Cost: 4wks, $480.00; 2wks, $325.00

Girls Scouts Day Camps and Summer Camps
The local council of Girl Scouts will be offering day camps and week-long
summer programs throughout June and July.
Hacienda Day Camp (located at 3101 N Sabino Canyon Rd.)
Ages: 6-12
Time: 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. (Monday – Friday)
Registration Cost: $155 (an additional $10 fee will be added to registration
costs of girls not already a member of Girl Scouts)

- It’s a Wacky Art World/Artistic Ambitions – June
9 - 13
This week is packed full of art projects that go beyond ordinary camp
crafts. KidzArt will be here to help you find your inner artist. Older
girls will learn about famous artists and create a masterpiece of their
own. On Friday show off your masterpieces at our Gallery Art Opening.
- Splish Splash/Wet and Wild West – June
16-20
Everyone knows it’s HOT, so come cool off in Camp Hacienda’s
pool! This week will be chock full of water games, water sports and water
fun! Bring sunscreen and a towel because we will have double the pool
time & double the fun.
- Light Detectives/Light Wranglers – July
7-11
Light is around us all the time, but have you ever stopped to think about
what it is? Find out how light is working all around us. Use it to
cook in a solar oven, make art, and even make your own camera.
- Express Yourself/Designing Divas – July
14-18
Express your own unique style. Learn basic weaving and sewing techniques,
how to read a pattern, and make your own fashion accessory that expresses
your personality. Strut your stuff on the runway at Friday’s
fashion show.
- Lights, Camera, Wacky Acting – July 21-25
All the world’s a stage, and YOU are the main attraction! Come
join us for a week of writing, rehearsing, designing costumes and performing
your play for all of camp. Friday’s evening performance is not
to be missed!

Girl Scout Resident Camps Include:
- Princess in the Pines – June 15-20
Ages 7-10
Enter our world of enchantment in a forest not so far away. You can
use your imagination to be a little princess while you make a tiara
or a fancy hat. You’ll discover the magic of friendship as you create
personalized stationery, decorator soaps and dainty chocolates. Learn
how to set a table and use your manners at an elegant tea party. You’ll
have time for other favorites like archery, hiking and sing-alongs.
This week will end happily ever after!
- Teddy Bear Picnic – July 20-22 or July
23-25
Ages 6-8 Fee: $100
For your first time away at camp pack a teddy bear (or other favorite
stuffed animal) and join us for a Teddy Bear Picnic. Enjoy three days
and two nights filled with camp fun. Try nature games, create a special
arts & crafts project and have a “Pooh Party.” Sing along
around a campfire and, of course, roast a marshmallow for your s’more.
- Packs And Poles – June 15-20
Ages 9-11
Plan, prepare and participate in a backpacking adventure. Learn about
low-impact camping, how to pack your backpack and outdoor cooking. Try
archery and arts & crafts in between warm-up hikes. Carry your pack
to a nearby lake and camp out for two nights. Spend time fishing at the
lake after you learn fishing safety and tips. Everyone must bring sturdy
hiking boots and have the ability and willingness to hike a few miles
each day while carrying a backpack. You can enjoy this program even if
you have little or no backpacking equipment or experience.
- Art Daze – June 22-27
Ages 11-14
This week you’ll be walking around in an art daze. This session
is packed with projects like tie-dye, candle making, weaving, drawing
and painting. All the traditional camp favorites are also on your schedule.
Do a special group project to add to the beauty of camp or dream up your
own project before all your art goes on display at the end of the week.
- Night Owls
June 22-27, Ages 9-11 ; July 13-18
Ages 11-14
Night owls will get a dose of traditional camp activities like volleyball
and archery in the afternoon, but after the sun has set and everyone
else is going to bed, your adventure will just be getting started. As
the day dims into dark you’ll have a chance to discover the night
life of camp. You may stargaze, learn a moon myth, take a night hike,
play a flashlight game, have a late night cookout and take a turn on
a night watch. And yes, you get to sleep in!
- Wild Things – July 13-18
Ages 7-10
If you are curious about the natural world around you, this is your chance
to find out more. From the leaves up high to the bugs down below, exploring
the nature and wildlife of the earth is fun! Nature games, songs, hikes,
and completing an environmental project will help you tune in to the
earth. Of course, traditional camp activities like drama and archery
will be part of the fun. Get ready to be wild!
- Fit for Fun – July 20-25
Ages 9-11
Look and feel great at the Whispering Pines “Spa.” Enjoy
fitness, fun and health as we taste nutritious foods, test different
hairstyles and try a facial. Exercise your muscles with volleyball, archery,
hiking and more. Try yoga stretches and different ways to warm up, stretch
and cool down. You’ll be making some special stuff, too, from lip
balm to bath soap. Enjoy campfires, outdoor cooking and dramatics in
between all the fitness fun.
- CSI: Camp Science Investigations – July
20-25
Ages 9-11
Be a part of the Whispering Pines CSI Team! Go in search of clues, decode
a secret message, grow crystals and examine fingerprints while you
solve a camp mystery. Do some fun science and uncover the truth using
chemistry, biology and physics. In addition, you will participate in
regular camp program including ultraviolet beaded jewelry and chromatographic
crafts. See you at the Lab!
- Off Broadway – July 20-25
Ages 11-14
Don’t miss this chance to be part of the big production at our
stage just 2500 miles from Broadway. Delve into the world of theater
from improvisation and acting to stage, costume and lighting design.
Practice your skills or learn new ones. Try traditional camp favorites
like archery, sing-alongs and cookouts too. This program is designed
for girls with some performing arts experience but 13 and 14 year olds
without experience are welcome.

Summer Martial Arts Camp 2008
Time: 8 am to Noon
Ages: 5-12

Program Cost: $99 per session per child, $49 each additional child from
same family.
Join us for week-long sessions that help develop self-confidence, self-esteem,
respect and self-discipline while also providing a positive energy outlet
for your child in a fun, safe atmosphere!! Learn basic self-defense skills
using karate, Judo and Jujitsu techniques. Engage in physical activity
that encourages balance & coordination.Also, fitness and coordination
games, cooperation/teamwork activities, stranger awareness lessons & practical
skills, age appropriate arts & craft projects and healthy snacks.
No martial arts experience necessary!!

Pima County Libraries
Pima County libraries offer safe and fun summer reading and activity
programs at the many locations throughout Pima county. For up-to-date
information on dates and times, visit www.library.pima.gov.
- Tots: Babytime
Designed for babies up to 18 months of age. At Storytime, children
have an opportunity to do activities that promote development and
learning. This program is designed for parents to participate with
their children.
Dates: Mondays, 10-10:30 a.m. at the Oro Valley Branch
- Teens: That’s My Take 2008
Write, direct, edit, and produce a short film with the professionals
from Pan Left Productions this summer in a 3-part series of workshops.
Learn about filmmaking and help us out by creating a piece about your
favorite book, a library program, library staff, or library customers
that we can post to the Library website. Finished pieces will be screened
at a special event where participants will be able to vote on their
favorites.
Dates: June 7 (1-3 p.m.), June 21 (1-4 p.m.), one Saturday in July.

Swim!
Pima County Parks and Rec’s Aquatics Program splashes into the
summer season on Saturday, May 24th. There are nine pools open during
the summer, including the new Picture Rocks Pool. Many locations even
have a water slide! Each facility provides programs such as recreational
swim, swim lessons and family events. Call 877-6000 to find a pool near
you!
Sonoran Desert Kids Club
The Sonoran Desert Kids Club is free for kids 5-12 and meets monthly
to visit local parks, explore nature and take part in science discovery
and nature crafts. Upcoming events include “Moon Mission” at
Feliz Paseos Park on Saturday, June 14th from 7-8:30 p.m. and “Monsoon
Animals” on Saturday, July 12th from 9-10:30 a.m. at Agua Caliente
Park.

Summer Day Camps at Agua Caliente Park (12325 E Roger Rd.)
Children are invited to participate in outdoor and indoor activities
for hands-on experiences with fun activities. Each session is unique – don’t

Fun With Clay
Children are encouraged to use their imaginations to make fun creatures
and silly faces. Wear your play clothes or bring an apron and be ready
to create! Classes are held at Northwest Art Center, located at 7770

Time: 4-6 p.m.

Drumming
Kids will have fun learning the basics of Japenese ensemble drumming,
including terms, etiquette, and historical and cultural context. Emphasis
will be on coordination, focus, creativity, and playing together as a
team. Classes are held at Odaiko Sonora, 1013 S. Tyndale Ave.
Ages: 8-12
