More than 1,000 people are expected to find hope for a stronger marriage and learn tools to resolve conflict in marriage when they attend the “Weekend to Remember” marriage conference at Tucson’s Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa in June.

“If you have a good marriage, this will make it better,” said Tucson Conference Ministry Director Bob Peterson. “But if you are struggling, this will give you hope and the tools to improve your marriage.”

An attendee of last year’s conference agreed. “We and our marriage were in crisis. We [now] have hope. We have a plan, a model, and tools to achieve a lasting healthy marriage.”

The two and a half-day program is designed to help couples take time away to focus on each other, on their marriage, to apply what they learn, and in some cases, to take steps toward healing a broken marriage.  Attendees range from pre-married couples to those who have been married more than 50 years.

High-energy instructors, using real-life examples and video clips, teach large-group sessions on “Threats to Oneness,” “Communication,” “Conflict Resolution” and “Leaving a Legacy of Destiny.” After the sessions, couples work together on projects to help apply the principles and tools.

“It is a non-denominational conference that teaches Biblical marriage principles,” said Peterson. He added that many who attend do not attend church regularly, but still enjoy the conference and learn practical tools while there.

Approximately 600 people, including at least 50 military members and spouses from Davis-Monthan and Fort Huachuca, attended the conference at Westin La Paloma last June.

At the end of the conference, some attendees shared how the conference impacted their marriages.

“We have been to counseling and paid $200 an hour so that we could blame each other.  Coming this weekend was priceless.  I know now that we have a chance to stay together by using what we have learned from FamilyLife,” said one attendee who has been married for 10 years.

An Air Force member married for more than 14 years said, “We stayed up talking every night until 1 am. This conference made us lovingly face many issues in our marriage. We had become so isolated and yet didn’t even realize how far apart we had grown.  This is the shoe leather to apply God’s principles in our lives!”

Ron Wheat, FamilyLife Field Staff, said, “Many people made life-changing decisions at the 2007 Tucson conference.”

One wife who had been married for two years said, “‘A Weekend to Remember’ has helped to restore my marriage.  I decided to stay with my husband after he confessed (to being unfaithful).  My life and heart were completely destroyed.  We decided to come to this conference to see if it could help us…and it has.  I feel God healing my heart and our marriage.”

Bob Patton, with Military Ministry at Fort Huachuca, hosted a breakfast for military couples who attended.

Col. Hal Hoxie, from Davis-Monthan, who was there with his wife, Kathy, said, “You now know how to have a stronger marriage and you have the tools you need. Take them back to your squadrons and use them to help encourage others.”

The words of one wife married more than 18 years represent one of the many positive stories shared from the conference.  Her husband had recently returned from Iraq, yet she said there had been an “impenetrable wall between them ever since.”  She said, "This weekend that wall came down!"
