Youthlink

Enter Katy Hudson.

Sixteen years old and touring with Christian artist Phil Joel on his Strangely Normal tour. She writes songs all about living for God and that we were created in God’s image. Her self-titled album Katy Hudson was released in 2001 along with the lead single “Trust In Me”. Lyrics such as “How could I be clean when I was so dirty?” and “How could I be made whole when I was torn apart?" are her own lyrics that she actually wrote.

Enter Katy Perry.

Same girl, seven years later. 23 years old and “living the life.” Still a song writer, except for writing a little bit different lyrics. Her song I Kissed A Girl has hit number one in iTunes and has been there for quite a while. “I kissed a girl and I liked it/The taste of her cherry chapstick/I kissed a girl just to try it/I hope my boyfriend don't mind it/It felt so wrong/It felt so right.”

Not exactly about being created in Christ’s image. Some of her other songs include One of the Boys and Ur So Gay.

The point of this month’s YouthLink is to just say that the world is bombarding us with ideas of how we should be living and behave. We need to stand strong in the morals that our parents have instilled in us. Maybe the people around us have been taught to believe differently, or they don’t know what to believe. That’s the time for you and me to take a stand and choose not to listen to songs like this one or go to movies that have questionable content or watch TV shows that encourage teens to be promiscuous.

When girls like Katy Hudson turn into Katy Perry, it scares me. But I realize that I am responsible for my own behavior – I’m old enough to know what I believe and how to live it out – and I’m responsible for making sure I stay on the right track. I hope Katy Perry finds Katy Hudson again… soon.

Youthlink is written by local high school teen, Bethanie.
Bethanie is in the 9th grade.
