Still Standing

When I was in boot camp I learned I should slightly bend my knees when standing at attention. Apparently, if you lock your knees for long periods of time you can faint.

As a Christian I find myself learning to “stand” (metaphorically) through life’s circumstances. The past month has been very uncomfortable to say the least. A series of events left me feeling like the spaceship Apollo 13. Did you see the movie? One small trigger caused a trickle effect that almost killed everyone on board.

In the past 20 years I have also learned a couple simple concepts that have kept me from fainting in my circumstances.

1. God loves me! Knowing that God loves me and has a plan for my life helped me keep my perspective. It would have been easy to think that God was angry with me or that He was not trustworthy. I am confident both of those mindsets would have caused me to faint! Instead, I believe Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

2. True friends are cold water in a hot desert! I could have never known how true and valuable my friends are had it not been for the difficult time I faced and their relentless prayers and support. Proverbs 17:17 says: A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Love and friendship go hand in had, so it stands to reason that those were the two things that unlocked my knees and kept me from fainting. If you are struggling, keep this in mind: Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)
