Setting the Thanksgiving Table by Ann Ziegler

Even though we don't experience the changing colors of fall that other parts of the states do, we can bring the vibrant reds, oranges and golds to our tables this Thanksgiving with some simple decorating ideas.

Pumpkins and Gourds
Pumpkins and gourds come in all colors, shapes and sizes. Choose a variety to use as a centerpiece for your table. Start with a larger bright orange pumpkin and add a medium sized white pumpkin. Surround these with ornamental green and gold gourds. Finish your display with small pumpkins and artificial leaves.

Make Each Seat Special
Let each guest know that you were thinking of them during your planning by creating a special place marker with their name on it. For a simple decoration, use card stock paper, craft scissors and colored pens to create name cards with cut-out leaves and pumpkins. If you have a little more time, attach smaller name place cards to baby pumpkins, hollow gourds or pinecones with gold ribbon.

Use the "Good Stuff"
Many of us have our good plates tucked away for a special occasion. Almost as many of us have used them once or twice in our lives! Why not pull out those special dishes, dust them off and use them! If your dishes aren't traditional Thanksgiving colors, incorporate your dish colors into your center piece or place settings to create a nice blend. Use designer ribbon, raffia or even candles.

Remember “Reason” for the Day
Thanksgiving, after all, is a day that has been set aside to especially remember our blessings. Consider a time of sharing before your meal. At each place setting, place three popcorn kernels (or any three small objects that complement your table decorations). Before eating, go around the table and have each person share three things that have happened during the last year for which they are thankful. Pass a small basket for each person to deposit their kernels into. This can be a very emotional time as you, and your family, recall the blessings that have taken place in your life over the past year.

Don't Forget the Young Ones!
When planning your Thanksgiving, be sure to remember younger guests. Instead of a cloth mat at their place setting, try a piece of construction paper and three or four crayons tied with string. (It works at the restaurant, so why not try it at home!) Many websites also offer coloring pages, dot-to-dots and fun pages that can be printed free of charge. From your web browser, search "Thanksgiving coloring pages" and you will easily find fun pages for every age group.

Setting your Thanksgiving table can be as simple or elaborate as you desire. Just remember, the most important part of the table will be your family gathering together, sharing a meal and creating new memories for the years to come.

Happy Thanksgiving!
