Tips For Cooler Weather Exercise and Eating
by Rachael Martin MS, RD
It is now the season in Tucson that many people wait for all year long.
The days are starting to get cooler; morning and evening light is changing.
With the weather change, sometimes our exercise routines and eating habits
change. Change is fine, but keeping it healthy is not always easy.
Here are some ideas to stay on the healthy side:
- Don't forget to drink water! It's so easy to remember when the temperatures
are in the 100's, but try to keep it up when the cooler days set in!
- Remember that your body still needs healthy foods. You may tend to gravitate
to richer, and maybe less healthier foods. Try to remember to make the best
choices you can.
- We can naturally tend to overeat in the winter. There is a natural
tendency to eat a bit more when it is cool. Some say we are "coded" to
eat more to keep fat on board to protect from cold or illness. Don't worry,
and still listen to your body for fullness!
- Change some food choices and keep them healthy! Crock-pot meals, soups,
and heavier foods often have appeal. Put lots of vegetables in them and keep
the fat content low, and you'll do just fine!
- Your body still needs activity. Don't start to hibernate! Keep up physical
activity and you will feel better all around.
- You might need to tweak your exercise routine a bit. You might need
to rearrange your schedule to not go for a run in the dark, or change the
type of exercise you do. But don't stop! Keep active to keep up your best
health.
Enjoy the days, (even without the fall foliage!) And a big welcome back
to our Snowbirds!
