Thousands In Tucson Will Come Together For 2007 National Day of Prayer Events
by Deborah Carey

The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America when the Continental Congress issued a proclamation setting aside a day of prayer in 1775. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln also called for such a day to take place. Then in 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

Tucsonans will be joining millions in prayer across the country to participate in the 56th Annual National Day of Prayer. “Our desire is to see thousands of Christians of all denominations and all ethnicity unite for prayer, praise, and worship at numerous events all over Pima County. We are reaching out to churches, pastors, youth groups, schools, homeschoolers, business men and women, who will come to one or all of our events May 2 and May 3, 2007  - to pray in unity with the entire country”, states Suzette Howe, Pima County NDP Coordinator.

The National Day of Prayer events focus on the need to pray for America and for those in leadership on all levels of government, media, family, church and educational areas of influence. This year’s observance features three main events:

Youth Rally – Wednesday, May 2, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., at Reid Park Bandshell and will include music, worship and prayer all presented by young people in our community. Lead by Youth Event Coordinator, Ashley Johnson.

Courthouse Event – Thursday, May 3, from 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m. at the Old Courthouse downtown where participants will focus on prayer to diminish drug addictions in Pima County. Directed by Courthouse Event Coordinator, Pastor Larry Munguia.

Main Event – Thursday, May 3, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., at the Reid Park Bandshell where Tucson’s leaders will come together for a Concert of Prayer. Live contemporary Christian music will also be featured and everyone is invited to enjoy this citywide family event directed by Pima County Coordinator, Suzette Howe.
