This month we think of Father's Day. But instead of the normal focus on craft ideas, this month we focus on making the most of the short amount of time we have with the people we love, making life a little brighter for others. We all know that with children, more is "caught than is taught" so we must make the most of every opportunity.
My grandmother used to say, "Today is a gift from God. He has given it to me to use as I choose. I can waste it or I can use it to be a blessing to others. But what I choose to do with today is important because I have exchanged a day of my life for it. When tomorrow is gone, today will be gone forever. I hope I will not regret the price I have paid for it."
Imagine you had a bank account. Every day $84,000 was deposited into your account. You had to spend that $84,000 each day because it would not carry over to the next day. But another $84,000 would be there in the morning. Wouldn't you be very careful how you spent each day's $84,000 and be sure you made the most of it? Of course you would! In reality, God has given each of us 84,000 seconds each day of our lives. We can waste those precious, teachable moments, or we can value them and be sure to invest some of the time in building lasting values in our children. So, the next time you think about watching an hour of TV, remember, that is 3,600 seconds! Have you spent the time you wanted to spend with your family that day?
As we celebrate Father's Day this year, what do you do if you are a single mom and the kids are not in contact with their father, or you are grandparents raising your grandkids? What if your father is no longer living on earth?
Help your kids make cards for fathers living in nursing and assisted living homes who may not hear from their children. Go read a story to a senior citizen or veteran. "Adopt" a father at church. There are ways to reach out and make the day special for everyone. And children will learn valuable lessons about the world not being "all about them" in the process.
