With the heat upon us, we cannot be reminded
enough to look out for the importance hydration plays in our health. Here
are a few tips to keep in mind.
- Water is the most essential nutrient. Our
body is composed of 70% fluid.
- Don’t wait for thirst to get a drink. This
is the first sign of dehydration!
- Other signs of dehydration include fatigue, headache, nausea, dizziness,
and in extreme cases temporary loss of nerve function.
- Stay hydrated by drinking at least 2 liters of water a day (or other
non-caffeinated beverage), and add more as activity or sun exposure increases.
- Don’t count on coffee or soda with caffeine, as these will dehydrate
you. So have your coffee with some water on the side!
- Freeze a bottle or two of water for the day, and
carry it with you wherever you go. The melting ice water
makes for a refreshing drink.
- Be especially careful to carry water with you when
driving, as you don’t
want to have a road emergency in the sun without being able to grab a drink.
- If you are not a water-lover, know that water can
be an acquired taste for some. You might want to start out by cutting a non-caffeinated
beverage, such as juice, with water, or add lemon. Then you
will be able to gradually work up to plain water. It truly is the
best hydrator.
- Sport beverages aren’t always necessary, unless you find yourself
growing weak despite drinking water. Then you might try one, but
be careful because the sugar in them on a hot day can cause a bit of nausea,
especially on an empty stomach.
- Enjoy the desert summer, and be safe!
