It’s Time for American Christians
To Take a Stand!

When I heard that this month’s issue would focus on fashion I laughingly recalled my days as a college fashion editor.  To be exact I was the Assistant Society Editor of the “Arizona Daily Wildcat.” It was my senior year and I wanted so much to get a good job in Journalism when I graduated.  I loved writing features but straight news reporting bored me and so my grades were B’s and not A’s for the most part.  Back in 1968 the Wildcat was put out everyday by the Journalism students.  I hoped that being on the staff would give me a chance to get inducted into the national journalism honorary and thus open wide the doors for me to land a great job.

It was so funny looking back because even though I tried to dress nicely, I was not very excited about reporting on fashion.  Most of the time I was just plain bored, with the exception when I could attend the college drama productions and write my own reviews.  When I graduated I did get into the honorary but when I applied for my first job they did not give a hoot or holler about any of that.  All they asked me was could I write.

I looked up fashionable in Webster’s dictionary and it explains it as conforming to the current fashion, the popular style of dress, conduct or speech.  In 2007 many things that were acceptable in conduct or speech in previous years are now labeled “politically in-correct.”  Prayer in schools, saying the pledge of allegiance with the phrase “under God,” talking openly about Jesus Christ being the only way to salvation, these are frowned upon by many in American society.  To be politically correct, or “in fashion”, it is best to say nothing unless of course it is to proclaim a new kind of self-serving god.

Well, I am not “in fashion” because I love Jesus Christ and I want the world to know it.  Often I fall short because I may not verbalize my feelings if I feel I might be made fun of.  Many might call me narrow-minded, bigoted and hopelessly naive.  But sometimes the same mockers that have rolled their eyes, patted me on the back and walked off have returned later to open their hearts to Jesus.

In Revelation 12:11, the Bible says: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death.”

Once a month my husband Ned and I sit down with one of our favorite magazines, “Voice of the Martyrs,” a publication that has been serving the persecuted church for 40 years.  What courage these Christians show who risk their lives daily to share the love of Jesus.  They often face beatings, imprisonment and death.  But in their unfashionable way they are spreading Christianity like wildfire in countries where Jesus in not allowed.

Can we as American Christians still act so apathetic in our own country?  Join me and let’s step off the fashion dais of keeping quiet about our love of God and let’s shout it out!  Jesus, I love you!  Back it up with loving service and as you become His hands and His heart, people will begin to join you.

I love you,

Kathy
