The last grill has cooled now and the final jumping castle deflated. There
seems to be a legacy lingering in the air at the playing fields, patios,
and Multi-Purpose Rooms of Title one schools in Amphi and Flowing Wells School
districts as a lasting reminder of recent events. This year's edition of "Backpack
to School" sponsored by GAP Ministries and partners, is over now. After
eight days and eleven schools, campuses returned to normal in anticipation
of these same children being well prepped and raring to go in the excitement
of a new school year.
With fond memories there is recollection of the smiling children as they received their backpacks and school supplies; of parents grateful for help in perhaps, troubled times; for the welcome of the administrators, teachers and staff; of over 450 volunteers who served at each school (many of whom followed the events from one school to another). Memory serves to remember each case of cold drinks, each package of hot dog rolls, each box of chips and best of all, over 6,000 happy children - not to mentions parents and siblings!
With the final tally done, GAP Ministries offers grateful appreciation to the many contributors and sponsors, volunteers, congregations and school staff and teachers who contributed so much in time and talent to assure each participating school had a great way to start the new school year. During the days of the events, 6,000 backpacks with school supplies were distributed; an estimated 12,000 hot dogs were prepared and eaten; over 15,000 cold drinks were consumed; 15,000 boxes of chips were distributed and games rewarded 22,000 prizes. An estimated 10,000 children and adults attended the event at one of the eleven participating schools. Community and the spirit of unity were well represented. Thanks for the memories!
