In the military, especially the Army, good deeds or good performance are often acknowledged by the presentation of a "Challenge Coin". The coin, generally about the size of a silver dollar is emblazoned with the unit crest, motto and sometimes the awarder's name.

In past years the coins served as a way to identify a member of a unit in an off duty setting. A soldier could challenge another soldier to produce his or her coin. If the person challenged could not produce the coin, a "round" (usually not Coke Cola) was bought for all in attendance.

In today's military services and spreading into other facets of society, the "Challenge Coin" serves as an impact award. It is presented often when least expected and with little fanfare.

The idea caught on with Community Renewal and a coin, which can serve as a key chain, was designed. The coin has the Logo of Community Renewal on the front and on the obverse side, the famous quote from John Wesley which urges the faithful to service with acts of charity and kindness.

The quote commands: "Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as you ever can."

This spirit of service has been exemplified in our community in many ways.

The first recipient of the Community Renewal award was Cherie Gray for her single handed work in the fast growing refugee community here in Tucson. Cherie has worked tirelessly with Somali and Burundi refugees resettled in Tucson.

The second award was to Greg and Pam Ayers for their remarkable community outreach. These co-founders of GAP Ministries have seen such blessings accrue in their lives that they are giving back to the community by sponsoring "Backpack to School" carnivals at the beginning of school at Title One schools in the Amphi and Flowing Wells school districts.

The third award was presented to Kelly Meltzer for her pro bono work in establishing Community Renewal as a non-profit in the community. Without her work the continuing efforts of Community Renewal to "building bridges and changing lives in communities" would not be possible.
