After returning from a family vacation, I thought back on how I tried to provide good food choices as we traveled. This brings up the idea of daily life, hectic schedules, and finding "grab and go" foods that are healthful.

Here are some ideas…

1. Carry a good supply of water with you.
This saves money on water from convenience stores, or going for sodas all day long.

2. Keep a "food bag" with you.
This can contain quick snacks so you can eat to your hunger. Try cheese sticks, granola bars, fruit that keeps, or whole grain crackers.

3. Find single serving sizes at the grocery store if it is easier for you, such as pre-packaged celery and peanut butter combinations.

4. Pack your lunch.
Whether you are going to work, running errands, or shuttling kids around-planning lunch ahead keeps better food with you and saves money on fast food.

5. Stop at restaurants that offer healthier alternatives, such as salad, fruit or smoothies, or healthful sandwiches.

6. If you must stop at a convenience store, you can still find some healthy choices. Look for fruit, cheese sticks, whole grain bagels, and more. Alternatives are available to the chip aisle!

7. It takes a bit more time to plan ahead, but it is worth it to stay healthier and keep control of your food choices. Once you get used to the idea, planning becomes easier.

8. Don't worry about some fast food now and then - this will fit into life as well, but better as an occasional visit. Also, Starbucks, and a soda on the way are fine!

Try to do your best, but also leave room for fun and a relaxed day.
